In February 2007, Nancy Kerrigan was named a National Spokesperson for the Foundation Fighting Blindness as a result of her continuous commitment to optic research and awareness. The Foundation Fighting Blindness supports research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by retinal degenerative diseases.
The Nancy Kerrigan Foundation was established by Olympic ice-skating champion Nancy Kerrigan and her husband Jerry Solomon. Created in honor of Nancy's mother, Brenda Kerrigan, who is legally blind, the Foundation distributes grants to non-profit organizations that support the visually impaired.
Recently, the Nancy Kerrigan Foundation made donations to the following charities:
* The American Red Cross to help assist the Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka * Circus of the Senses: a special production of The Big Apple Circus designed to meet and exceed the needs of children who are blind and/or vision-impaired and deaf and/or hearing impaired * USA Aniridia Network: a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to assisting those with low vision or blindness due to the genetic eye disease Aniridia.
